Opportunities in the early colony were limited to times of exchange between European settlers and Native Americans. This area was settled by the French in the early 1700's. In the latter part of the century it became a British and then a Spanish territory before achieving statehood in 1819. It was a minor port of exchange, with a small population, composed mainly of soldiers and traders, which fluctuated constantly.
